Only 60 in the World: The Story Behind the Natuzzi Torsion Table in Vancouver

In our showroom filled with beautiful furniture, there are some pieces that stop you in your tracks. At Inspiration Furniture Vancouver, the Natuzzi Torsion Table was one of those rare icons - a quiet but powerful centerpiece, standing with the weight of tradition, craftsmanship, and design history.

Created to mark the 60th anniversary of Natuzzi Italia, the Torsion Table is not a product of mass production. It's a rare object. A numbered, limited-edition sculpture with only 60 ever made worldwide, each individually signed by renowned Italian architect, Mr. Mario Bellini and Natuzzi founder Mr. Pasquale Natuzzi. Retailing at $88,000 CAD, this sculptural olive wood table is not only a collector’s dream but a functional work of art.

Just this week, the last remaining unit in Canada, serial #55, was sold at our showroom in Vancouver - marking the end of its public presence, and the beginning of a new chapter in our client’s private home.

From Puglia to Vancouver: A Story Carved in Wood

To understand the Torsion Table is to understand where it comes from, both materially and emotionally. Its twisted base is inspired by the centuries-old olive trees of Puglia, known for their resilience and striking, sculptural trunks shaped by centuries of wind and sun.

"The Torsion table, in olive wood, represents my inexhaustible passion for these fascinating types of home architecture which, inevitably, always have a central position."
Mario Bellini

The result is something rare in contemporary design: a piece that feels simultaneously ancient and modern, monumental and warm, grounded and ethereal.

Not Just Built - Grown, Aged, and Crafted

The creation of a Torsion table begins long before the workshop. The olive wood used must be sourced from authorized, sustainable plantations - and that’s just the beginning. Unlike more uniform woods like oak or walnut, olive is unpredictable. It dries slowly. It warps. It refuses to be tamed.

Once harvested, each log rests and dries for months before it can be cut. Even then, due to the irregular grain, the wood must be sliced into strips no longer than 80 cm and no thicker than 5 cm. It is a time-consuming process that results in much smaller yields. These thin strips are then precisely shaped by CNC machines, layered, and glued together into curved forms — then hand-polished with natural oil wax, allowing the wood to retain its living character.

Each of the six “branches” that form the base contains about 10 of these strips, meticulously aligned and joined. The central core, a 10mm polished steel cylinder, stabilizes the structure and ensures the glass top floats evenly above.

And while the surface is refined, imperfections are celebrated. Natural knots, seams, and variations are considered signs of authenticity, reminders that this is not just a design — it is nature, reinterpreted.
